James Brown, the undeniable "Godfather of Soul," told friends from his hospital bed that he was looking forward to performing on New Year's Eve, even though he was ill with pneumonia. His heart gave out a few hours later, on Christmas morning.
The Godfather of Soul has died aged 73.
He'd checked into Emory Crawford Hospital with suspected pneumonia.
However, his agent, Frank Copsidas, said the exact cause of death was unknown.
James began his music career in 1953, and sang hits such as It's A New Day, Brother Rapp, Get Up (I Feel Like Being A Sex Machine), I Got You (I Feel Good) and Papa's Got A Brand New Bag.
He had a tricky childhood and got into trouble with the police - his first arrest came at 16, when he took part in an armed robbery and was sentenced to eight to 16 years of hard labour.
In 1991, after another stint in prison, he made a good faith effort to rebuild his life and career.
And in 1993 he received a lifetime achievement Grammy Award. He's sung with the likes of Joss Stone and Will Young. |
