Economic inequality
Many tourists come from societies with different consumption patterns and lifestyles than what is current at the destination, seeking pleasure, spending large amounts of money and sometimes behaving in ways that even they would not accept at home. One effect is that local people that come in contact with these tourists may develop a sort of copying behavior, as they want to live and behave in the same way. Especially in less developed countries, there is likely to be a growing distinction between the 'haves' and 'have-nots', which may increase social and sometimes ethnic tensions. In resorts in destination countries such as Jamaica, Indonesia or Brazil, tourism employees with average yearly salaries of US$ 1,200 to 3,000 spend their working hours in close contact with guests whose yearly income is well over US$ 80,000.
Irritation due to tourist behavior
Tourists often, out of ignorance or carelessness, fail to respect local customs and moral values. When they do, they can bring about irritation and stereotyping. They take a quick snapshot and are gone, and by so acting invade the local peoples' lives.
In many Muslim countries, strict standards exist regarding the appearance and behaviour of Muslim women, who must carefully cover themselves in public. Tourists in these countries often disregard or are unaware of these standards, ignoring the prevalent dress code, appearing half-dressed (by local standards) in revealing shorts, skirts or even bikinis, sunbathing topless at the beach or consuming large quantities of alcohol openly. Besides creating ill-will, this kind of behavior can be an incentive for locals not to respect their own traditions and religion anymore, leading to tensions within the local community. The same types of culture clashes happen in conservative Christian communities in Polynesia, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. |

During my first visit in Egypt, I was sometimes numb with shock about how some tourist were disregarding Egyptian custom and rules, and was wondering if whether their attitudes was the result of their ignorance or simply from their dullard way of thinking.
What do you think about some tourist who miss to respect customs and culture, while they travel in Egypt?
How you local people ( Egyptians and others) see this massive flow of tourist coming into these tourist resort and disregard the customs ?
What do you think can be done to avoid such a culture shock between tourist and local ?
I personally think that some advices and information should be given to the tourist who which to visit the country, so they can have an idea of how to behave according to the culture they will be in contact with.
The same should be done to the locals people in order to avoid confusion and misunderstand |

Hello Kamar how are you?
You are right to bring up this observation as it also needs to be discuss and I think the same way about those who come to our countries and disrespect the laws and the customs, but you don't need to be Muslim to behave that way  there are also other non Muslim who miss to respect local customs, however what I would like to know its how Egyptian people see tourist' behavour and how they percieve them? |

Ciao Anissa :P I'm going good
What say ? I know what much Moslim people think and see about we, and I mean we foreigner...they think we are dogs.......this is for our way to dress and for our way with men......naturally I no want to generalizze about all this because not all are thinking like that ( I hope ) but most do :?
Is true that much foreigner go in an Arabic country half naked and this is wrong, and much foreigner go to be drunk in an Arabic country and also this is wrong but you know, some Arabic country, like Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, allows we all this because they know tourists bring money so they leave we do all we want.
Now I'd like to leave some Egyptian to answer your question, it woukd be interesting  |

Hope no all Egyptian think that we are dog, :? I feel that the educate one are more aware and inform about our culture and the the way we live.
One thing that drive me crazy its when they talk about western people as one nation like America, and Europe, to me just to see put European on the same bag is very wrong as sometimes we are not even similar.

Some Tourist also go to Egypt because they like the culture, and the customs history of ancient Egypt, or to learn Arabic and some of them as you said, go there only to get drunk and hang around half naked, which is not a very Conservative attitude to have in the Islamic state, however I feel they do not have much choice as to tolerate such kind of behavior as Tourism is one of their first revenue and if tomorrow tourism is banned it will lead the country in the terrible bad economy situation.
Now I'd like to leave some Egyptian to answer your question, it would be interesting
Yes it will also be interesting to get some replies from some Egyptian however your point of view of the subject is also interesting |
