Uncovered sewage manholes are posing a threat to citizens' health and lives in Alexandria and Sohag. Residents are submitting an increasing number of petitions to the water facility governmental body. A child slipped into an uncovered manhole in Alexandria, as did Bekhet Abdel Malak, a 70-year-old man in Sohag. Both victims' relatives asked the governmental body for compensation for the loss of their loved ones. They were shocked at the response they received. Not only was there no apology, the water body also claimed the fault lay with the ministry of interior affairs, as they are responsible for dealing with the theft of the manhole covers.

Al Masryon - Masarawy
That's the kind of scenario that always happens in Egypt! Every authority tries to blame the other for their common mistake! End the day, more and more innocent people die..Humans have become of no value, until the people responsible have a loss to dear one to them! Indifference to no limit! |

"Their common mistake"... How true!
I cannot understand this indifference. It is the government's duty to improve this particular situation. And no matter if it is the water body or the ministry of interior affairs. Shouldn't both of them have the same objectives? |

It all comes from responsibility and sense of being and human and understanding that human life has a value...Unfortunately indifference has become to be the "norm", as people who are supposed to be humans stopped to care...It's a pitty, but it's true...
We are still living the age of decline of simple human rights... |

I sit on my balcony most days. I have been watching the traffic maneuver round a man hole who'es cover has been sticking out of the ground for well over 3 weeks. There have been near miss accidents as traffic do not always see it untill it is too late.
If I had been living in the UK I would phone the local authority and they would fix it straight away.....due to HEALTH and SAFETY regulations
Where do I phone here???
I could not get the Gas board to call on Friday because of a suspected leak.... No one could call...no one works on a Friday...Again we have an emergency system where people can phone, and someone will be with you with in an hour...
The man hole is now being filled up with someones rubbish.   |

I don't know it people don't feel responsible for each other in Egypt...but I think the bureaucracy in Egypt works with this mentality.
I was living in this apartment complex in Nasr. A few blocks away was the rubble of an apartment that had burned down. It had taken the fire department over 3 hours to get to the scene and by then it was too late.
So one night, I woke up to this loud banging and my living room apartment was being lit up every few seconds with a bright flash of light. So I looked outside, and there was this large electric box spewing sparks and light. Of course, I was scared because I thought..."Great, it's going to take forever for the fire department to come...and who knows what will happen. The fire might spread..."
Two people from a local restaurant came out with buckets of water and tried to snuff out the flames. Then another group of people came out with a fire extinguisher. Nothing seemed too work. But right before my eyes people who were innocently passing by stopped to try to fix the situation. They formed a line filling the now empty buckets with sand. Some even just threw handfuls into the electric box.
Within about 15 minutes, they had managed to snuff out the fire. Not surprisingly 4 hours later the firefighters came...too late. From what I witnessed, I don't think Egyptians feel no responsibility for each other...but I think government and its various branches feels no responsibility for its citizens. |
