Hunt for killer in UK as vice girls vanish
LONDON: Women have been warned not to go out alone at night during the upcoming party season in the wake of a frantic hunt by the police for a serial killer who has already killed three prostitutes in the sleepy county of Suffolk and two more are missing.
More than 100 detectives are working on the investigation and hundreds of uniformed officers are conducting extra patrols in the red-light areas of Harwich and Ipswich in south-east England, where the serial-killer has already struck three times.
“My message is simple — stay off the streets. If you are out alone at night you are putting yourself in danger. Whatever happens do not leave your friends alone,” said Jacqui Cheer, Assistant Chief Constable of Suffolk, warning all women.
The naked bodies of Tania Nicol, 19, Gemma Adams, 25, and Anneli Alderton, 24 — all sex workers — have been found in the last nine days dumped in the woods on the outskirts of Ipswich. The remains of the women show no sign of any serious sexual assault, but all of them have been killed in a ‘very similar’ manner — asphyxiation.
Raking up memories of the Yorkshire Ripper, who terrorised women in the 1970s and 80s in north England when he is said to have killed 13 women before being caught, the police are worried about the safety of the two other sex workers who have gone missing.
Police on Tuesday told the serial killer to give up and urged the public to come forward with anything they may have on the murder of the three women or the disappearance of the other two. Suffolk police have also drawn up plans to draft in extra police support from other counties as they only have a staff of 1,300 officers who are all involved in the manhunt.
Frightened by the murders, the red light area in Ipswich was quiet on Monday night with only a handful of the 40 odd prostitutes who normally work the area out on the street. Many of the sex workers have a drug habit that forces them to take risks despite warnings to stay at home.
