Wekalet El Balah
( A long time ago it was the date market) :) This market is especially very good to buy fabrics, curtains table cloths bed linen (Egyptian cotton) etc and since there are so many the same kind fabric shops the prices are low, you will not only find stalls but huge shops of several floors high Bargain hard if he doesn't budge just tell him you will have to spend your money next door lol
The market is located in the old neighborhood of Boulaq Abu Al Ela, Kornish El-Nile Streetit is close to the Nile and on the left hand side of the World Trade Center and Arcadia Mall.
I know this area very well 8) Slip into Egyptian society and experience a traditional market, go early in the morning to avoid the (huge !)crowd of the afternoon and evening near the entrance of the market you find the classier shops with fabrice you can not find anywhere else in Cairo the further you go inside the market the cheaper it gets
( less quality too)
'El Wekalah'
I don't know who this is :? but there are some nice photos here to transport you back to Cairo

Khan al Khalili is busy, no question about that. Even though it always gets blamed for being a tourist trap...it dawned on me that it has been trapping tourists for 100s of years! Now that says something. You really do feel the age of each nook and cranny of that place.
BTW that looks like a very interesting shisha / coffee place. What's it called? The place that I normally went to overlooked the main square and the mosque. |

Are there ppl that will make things other than curtains? Like if you go in a shop and find some nice fabric for a dress/galabeya, is there someone to make it for you???
Maybe I will be able to go to this market the next time I am in Cairo as I am always looking for something new to go see. But I do like to go to the Khan el Khallili . . . seems I have to go everytime I am in Cairo and I always end up buy some jewellry, LOL.
Feb. 25th . . . I will be there!!! |
