ABDEEN PALACE One of the palaces of the former Egyptian royal family
Located in downtown Cairo, Abdeen Palace, the King Farouk 's seat up to 1952
Abdeen Palace is considered one of the most sumptuous palaces in the world in terms of its adornments, paintings, and large number of clocks scattered in the parlors and wings, most of which are decorated with pure gold.
The Red Salon, (the White Salon and the Salon Vert not showing) are all used today as waiting rooms for official delegations visiting the president. Each of these salons’ name reflects the color of the wall paintings.
The Byzantine hall has been used as a foyer where guests would gather before going into the main ballroom It is one of the most elegant halls because of it decorations; it has been harmoniously decorated with Coptic, Byzantine and Islamic adornments
Built by Khedive Ismail, to become the official government headquarters instead of the Citadel, this palace was used as well for official events and ceremonies. Abdeen Palace was so called as it was built on the debris of a house owned by the Turkish Prince Abdeen Bey.
THE THRONE HALL
The main room of the palace where procedures of the king’s enthronement took place. This room witnessed King Farouk’s wedding. This spacious room is used today as the main room where major events and ceremonies are held.
The Salon of Mohammad Ali is one of the largest salons of the palace where the guests would gather before going into the dinning room or the theater
The theater includes hundreds of gold-plated seats and a lounge with curtains that was used then as a private place for women only. Today, the theater is still functional, and Egyptian shows are presented to entertain the palace’s guests
GUEST WINGS
The Belgian wing is a private wing established for the sojourn of the Egyptian rulers’ guests. It was so called since the King of Belgium was the first king to stay in it. In this wing there is a special bed which is considered one of the rare antiquities in terms of its adornments and handicrafts. It has been well furnished and equipped to be used as residence of the president’s guests.
Queen Nazli Wing especially established for the Mother Queen’s residence. Today, this wing is used as a residence for the president’s guests.
:) Hmmm ........I do like that name ; Nazli
Abdeen Palace is considered one of the most sumptuous palaces in the world in terms of its adornments, paintings, and large number of clocks scattered in the parlors and wings, most of which are decorated with pure gold.
Built by Khedive Ismail, to become the official government headquarters instead of the Citadel that was built by Saladdin Al Ayoubi in 1171, which was the old seat of Egypt's government.
Abdeen Palace was used as well for official events and ceremonies. Abdeen Palace was so called as it was built on the debris of a house owned by the Turkish Prince Abdeen Bey; one of the army commanders under Mohamed Ali Pasha.
Construction started in 1863 and continued for 10 years but the palace was officially inaugurated in 1874. Erected on an area of 24 feddans, the palace was constructed by the French Architect Rousseau along with a large number of Egyptian, Italian, French and Turkish decorators.
The palace's garden was added in 1921 by Khedive Tawfik on an area of 20 feddans. Until 1921, it was cultivated with citrus and other fruit trees, and then it was altered to a flower garden. The palace has several pavilions used for afternoon tea.
The cost of building the palace reached LE 700,000 in addition to LE 2 million for its furnishing. More money was also spent on the palace's alteration, preservation and maintenance by consecutive rulers.
The palace includes 500 rooms and ballrooms, not to mention the parlors, with each room containing a minimum of 100 pieces of art. Although fully equipped to be used as a private residence, it was rarely used for that purpose but mainly for official events.
The main room of the palace was where procedures of the king's enthronement took place. This room witnessed King Farouk's wedding. This spacious room is used today as the main room where major events and ceremonies are held.
Believing in the fact that such palace is part and parcel of Egypt's heritage, President Mubarak in the late 1980s ordered that the palace, be completely restored. Restoration work took longer than expected as the old palace was hit during the strong 1992 earthquake that jolted Egypt
The palace recently became the host of the following museums:
The Arms Museum
The Silver Wear Museum
The Medals & Decorations Museum
President Mubarak's Gifts Museum |
