:) Recently I had an overseas visitor who had never been to Spain before These are some of the sites which are not too far from my home we visited :
Malaga airport is a long drive from my home so we broke it for coffee
on the terrace of the Kempinsky hotel

from where we walked along the beach to the Puro beach club for lunch
it has an Arab chic style with a desert-safari area and oriental carpets , low tables and a beautiful infinity pool

Boutiques Bars and Restaurants

The town;Tarifa
Province:Cadiz
Region: Andalucia

World famous for wind surfing
The beach is 10 km long
You can see the hazy Rif mountains of
Africa in the distance , its is only 14 km away from Tarifa

It takes 35 minutes by boat to arrive in the Arab world ;
Tangiers Morrocco

:) ,,, drinks on that terrace :arrow:

Ten kilometres of white sandy beaches, unspoilt countryside and some of the best windsurfing conditions in Europe have established Tarifa as a true surfers paradise.

From tarifa and Gibraltar you can see the STRAIT OF GIBRALTAR
where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean ;

Europe (Spain) is on the left. Africa (Morocco) is on the right. The Rock of Gibraltar, administered by Great Britain, is the peninsula in the back left

The water is teeming with fish ; small species of dolphins (the Common and the Striped Dolphin), and even Pilot Whales and Bottelnose Dolphins.
and around April to July, the biggest toothed whale and the Sperm Whale and even a Fin Whale (the second biggest animals on earth) passes by occasionally.

For a short time only, between July and August, the Orcas travel to the Strait of Gibraltar, to feed on the Tuna caught with long lines by the Moroccan and Spanish fishermen

La Iglesia de San Mateo

We had a look inside the magnificent church of San Mateo in the centre and nearby in Calle de los Azogues the buildings date back to the 16th and 17th century.
A tiny square of an ancient Christian tombstone embedded in one of the church walls (dated March 30, 674) proves there was a functioning church here during Visigothic times, before the Moorish conquest.
Some years later came the church's "door of pardons," dating back to the late 15th century, when Tarifa was on the edge of the Reconquista. During the period when the Spain's Catholic Kings were driving the Moors back to Africa, Tarifa was a dangerous place.
To encourage people to live here, the Church offered a huge amount of forgiveness to anyone who stuck it out for a year.
One year and one day after moving to Tarifa, they would have the privilege of passing through this special "door of pardons," and a Mass of thanksgiving would be held in that person's honor.
Nowadays, in the evenings, it seems life squirts from the church out the front door and into the fun-loving main street, lined with cafes and bars. :)

Tarifa is believed to have been founded by King Tago in 2118 BC more;

GIBRALTAR
This "island" is 3 miles long and 1/2 mile wide. It is home to 30,000 plus (humans) and 250 plus Barbary Apes! :)

Aproaching by air;

:roll: This seems kind of odd yet it's real;
Gibraltar Airport, the only airport in the world that has a road crossing the runway and its the only road into Gibraltar
(The road closes for landing and taking off , ofcourse)

The airport is also used by NATO forces and the RAF

We walked right over the runway to the main square
and had a drink on one of the many terraces
before walking along Main street up to the cable car

which took us to the highest point of the rock from where this photo is taken

pictures of the wild barbary Apes which live at the top of the Rock

After the cable car a walk through the botanical gardens up to the Rock hotel
Lunch on the terrace l;

from which you have this view;

At night the Rock of Gibraltar can be seen from as far as Marbella because its lit up beautifully

walking
along the beach in the evening

There are 2 ways to Marbella ; via the tolroad through the hills and mountains or along the Costa del Sol's coastal road which we choose stopping off in Corte Ingles, Marbella

from where you can walk to
Puerto banus the marina with rows of restaurants

many boutiques

Good food

a "haagen-dazs" moment :)

Boats and expensive cars
this is where the rich and famous hang out ;

I'll be taking Iberia and I have a 6 hour gap in Madrid till my connecting flight. I was wondering is the airport close enough to anything interesting in the city?

Pixel :) are you going to Egypt and which airline ?
It could take up to an hour to get through security it's about 35 minutes from the airport to the center of the city by metro but to get to the metro is a bit of a treck too :(

I arrived in the new terminal from South Africa earlier this year and its huge !
Moving around takes allot of time !
Personally I would take the free shuttle bus to the nearest hotel like this one;
http://en.venere.com/hotels_madrid/hotel_high_tech_madrid_aeropuerto.html?ref=4488
and either rent a day room to shower and sleep a few hours or just hang around the hotel,eating and sitting somewhere comfortable then go back to the airport to do a spot of shopping, that way I would not be anxcious to miss my connecting flight. :wink:
