Authorities in the Saudi city of Mecca have banned the sale of pet cats and dogs at the request of religious police, the Arab News reported Thursday.

The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice made the request after many young Saudis had gone outdoors with their pet dogs thus violating the kingdom's culture and traditions.

Authorities in the city of Jeddah have also begun enforcing the decision, the report said.

The commission complained that Saudi youth, apparently influenced by Western culture, were bringing their pets into public places, allegedly causing distress to families with young children.

The Jeddah Municipality had received a letter from the Mecca governorate banning the sale of pet dogs and cats in the city, the report added.

Islam considers dogs unclean and Muslim traditional families do not keep dogs as pets, while there is no mention of cats.

Saudi Arabia applies a strict interpretation of the Islamic law. The religious police is a special force that makes citizens comply with the strict social norms.

I don't really understand the ban on cats. And what happens if someone adopts a dog or a cat instead of buying it?

I really don't know.
Maybe having a pet is allowed as long as it's behind closed doors.

Honestly......sometimes I think it's this sort of edict that makes Islam completely incomprehensible to non-Muslims :(

What on earth does having a pet cat have to do with religion?

There are SOME dogs that I don't think should be allowed out, dogs that aren't trained and are a danger to the public.........I like dogs, but I think they have to be trained and should only be allowed out on a lead...I'm a bit scared of dogs running around on their own in the streets :(

But I really don't understand how keeping a pet says anything about your religiousness, I think this is just control gone overboard :(

Maybe in a way, it's the equivalent of the 'political correctness' that's gone overboard here, two sides of the same coin, we've gone to ONE loony extreme and the Saudis have gone to the other..

I think that the thinking that goes along with most of their laws are fallacies. Such as cutting off one's hand if they are caught stealing. And their justifier is that these strict laws keep down the amount of crime.
I think it is barbaric, plain and simple. No logic behind it, just insanity and fear.

And what will the "authorities" going to do if a dog or cat goes poopoo outside? Will they cut off their heads?
