Miss Kamar

I have never been to Kiev, yet I have great friends from over there, and yes it is a very beautiful city as well. Kiev is full of history as it existed as early as 5th century. Kievan Russia existed (Russia was baptized in 988 in Grand Duke Vladimir's reign who was pursuaded by his grandmother Olga (baptized as Elena through Bysantium) to change pagan ways and turn to Christianity) before Moscow was built as a northern fortress to protect northern borders from invasions. Later Kiev lost its political significance and Moscow became the capital. St Petersburg was built in 1703 by Peter the Great and it is more European city than it is "Russian" (Moscow and Kiev are, yet some Ukrainians will fiercely dispute my claim just as much as some re-wrote the history to claim Ukraine as Ukraine and not Kievan Russia, etc etc etc which is a separate conversation totally). St Petersburg is often called "NOrthern Venice" or "Northern Paris" and it is regarded more beautiful than both Paris and Venice all togther, not by me but I have heard it over and over from foreigners.

Either city is great and worth visiting. Each city is beautiful and full of history and things to see and do. No doubt about it. I prefer St Petersburg personally.

As far as prices, I have no clue....

Ummmm, me too I was thinking about Mosca and St Petersburg.
I will think, if I don't go before Septmeber, I have to wait the next year : too much cold in Winter there :(

About price, every tour operator, cost for 1 week, about 1400 euro.

Both Moscow and St Petersburg have been capitals throughout the Russian history. St Petersburg became the capital in 1703 till 1917-1918. Moscow has been the capital once again since then. Putin tried to move the capital back to his native St Petersburg, but it has not been successful.
There is a whole story behind this, why Moscow is so “Russian” and why St Petersburg is so “European” (at least in looks) and it is an incredible one, which explains all the whats and whys.

As for the choice between Moscow and St Petersburg to visit, I can say it can be an easy one, depending on how much time you allow yourself to travel. One week is a short time, of course. But if all you look for is to visit the St Basil, Red Square, The Kremlin, or you make a decision to limit yourself to that and you lean more towards St Petersburg, it can be easily done. Take an overnight 6-hour express train at midnight from St Petersburg to Moscow, arrive at about 6 am, and start touring, hit a train back to St Pete at midnight or so again and you are back to Pete’s city in no time at all. I tend to think you can find more “Russian” in Moscow and the Golden Ring of Russia in terms of architectural styles, etc than you will find in St Petersburg, which offers the European type of glamour.

P.S. I would NOT suggest you should drive from Moscow to St Petersburg. I would advise you against that totally, unless you have a native to help you
