Berlin is hosting an exhibition of ancient Egyptian artefacts from the sites of two lost cities found off the coast of Egypt six years ago.

Sculptures, tablets and everyday items are on display at the Egypt's Sunken Treasures exhibition at the Martin-Gropius-Bau museum. They have never been on public view before.

The cities, Heraklion and Canopus, were thriving centres of business and religion for hundreds of years before being destroyed by earthquakes and tsunamis 1,300 years ago.

Some of the exhibits include the largest stone tablet in the world containing Egyptian and Greek texts and the largest free-standing statue of an Egyptian divinity ever found.

Maybe because these artefacts have been discovered in the last ten years and it needs time to organize an exhibition.
If you are interested to see how the discoveries in the port of Alexandria and in the Bay of Abukir were made, look at the Franck Goddio's website (Franck Goddio is a marine archaeologist and discovered all these treasures): www.franckgoddio.org |

I could see this exhibition in Paris two weeks ago: it was really interesting: spectacular exhibits, pedagogical explanations about the technology they used to bring the objects to the surface.
For everyone interested in objects of the Ancient Civilisation found in the underwater near Alexandria, there is the open air museum by the roman theatre of Alexandria where you can see other sculptures, monuments found by Jean-Yves Empereur in the underwater site of Qaitbay.

| You can bet that Zahi Hawass has an agenda here, or the objects would never be allowed out of the country and into exhibition in Berlin! Aside from that, I would love to see this exhibit! It is exciting to think about new items from old Egypt! |

Louise, you still have a chance to see this exhibition
Bonn will host it in the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland from 5 April 2007 until 27 January 2008. |
