Can someone help me make sense of this. I entered into an orfi marriage when I moved to Egypt. I had intended to have a real relationship with the man. This was 2004, a few months later, he left and took the orfi paper with him and I have not seen it since. Recently (2006) I married another man in Egypt - real, legal marriage.
Now the first man is threatening me with being married twice and sending me to jail if I return to Egypt.
I am not Egyptian, I can not read Arabic and until he suggested the idea, new nothing of an orfi marriage and I entered into it with the assurance it was not a real marriage and held no consequence what so ever. Just a license for sex, an acknowledgement that I had concented to be with the man.
How can I have the orfi paper destroyed when I do not have it?
Can this man (creep, actually) hold such a theat over me? I want to return to Egypt with my legal, real husband and visit his family.

Thank you, I have read all of what is on that site - I had infact read it before. I am unable to get an answer to my question.
I was told that a man could have many orfi 'marriages' as they do not actually exit. The one I got the orfi paper with said there was only one copy and it belonged to me. He then took it.
I have no intention of going to a jail in Egypt or anywhere else. I want this stupid orfi nonsense removed from my life. I want to live with my husband forever.
What can I do about it. I do not know the witness (I know one of them only). I can not read it. I do not know what it says and have no reason to trust what I was told about what it says.
If to be free of it only involves ripping it up, what protection do I have?
I really do need some advice. I have read many discussions on the pitfalls of it.
It appears to be the most sexist item that exists.

OK....

There is only one way that a non-Egyptian can get legally married to an Egyptian in Egypt and that is at the ministry of justice at Lazoughly Square in Cairo. There is a prevalent practice in Egypt, particularly Luxor, of Egyptian men taking their foreign girlfriends to a lawyer’s office and 'getting married'. The papers they give you will satisfy the police if you are challenged when out together in the evenings and will satisfy the landlord of any flat that you rent so that you can live together, but this is not a legal marriage.

With all respect to you Hedge. I am so sorry to say. YES Orffi is a legal marriage ‎but not registered. If he takes the Orffi paper to court and legalized, then it will be ‎legal. And this is done very easily if his lawyer will get the two witnesses and prove it ‎is your signature on this paper. Then you can not deny that you are married to this ‎man. And by the way you also do the same if he does not admit the Orffi marriage.‎

By the way this is what Egyptians and foreigners are doing in Hurghada and Sharm. ‎Getting an Orffi marriage the going to court to register it and legalized. These men are ‎abusing the use of it.‎

Klara, you need to tell you current husband about it and try to seek the advice of an ‎Egyptian lawyer, to know exactly what your rights are in this particular case.‎

Once more, please note that Orffi marriage is not a sex license it is a real marriage ‎‎100% correct if it is witnessed by two Moslem men and everyone around you knows ‎that you are married. But you can not have your legal rights as a wife in case he dies ‎nor have children. That is why serious couples go to court to legalize it. ‎

Good luck.‎

This is the shorts way to do it. But not the only way Hedge. You still can register an ‎Orffi marriage in court and it is in lieu of this marriage. Of course it takes more time ‎to legalize it. But this is a second way to do it.‎

For your kind information nothing illegal will satisfy the police or the landlords if it is ‎not legal. Once more Orffi is a legal marriage but without rights to both parties and ‎not registered.‎

I have told my husband of the orfi marriage, he was the one who told me of the other man's plans to make trouble for me. Egypt may be a big, populated place but it is not really. It is very interconnected.
I am at the disadvantage for not understanding Arabic and what is being said around me.
I want to know how i can have the orfi paper cancelled and what effect it will have on me should I return to Egypt. My husband says nothing will happen because I am not Egyptian and I do have a laywer working for me on this.
I want nothing to do with the man of the orfi paper.

My ONLY advice to you is that you stick to what the Egyptian experience lawyer will ‎say. Good luck. ‎

Hi Klara, well if the orfi crap has no rights&not registered, then you must be safe,if you former husband(read creep)went missing more than 6 months then you are granted automatic divorce,we have good lawyers here in egypt, especially women who can make this mans life a misery if he dared bother you,I have heard several similar stories and my heart goes out to people like you,pls keep in touch and let us know the outcome.
cheers
