Konafa anyone?????????????
The art of konafa-baking is exacting, deliciously exquisite and almost mystical in its exalted uniqueness. (Elha eeeny ya ommi/mamy for the sophisticated ~ save me mama)
A kanafani during the holy month of Ramadan, the young and hip Hagg Omar who oversees this bakery off Faisal Road, Haram, works for the rest of the year as a fatatri (a feteer specialist).
The scene encapsulates a prominent aspect of the city's often culinary-oriented night life.

Freshly sqeezed for you..............
Sometimes, when there are two of you messing around with the camera in the car, you can take a picture right in front of your subject without anybody noticing what you're doing. Tricky tricky....
That saves you asking permission and having to explain yourself when, all that attracts you in the scene is a quality of feeling: a combination of night-time dereliction and ready-for-action professionalism.
Only late at night, does Cairo yield such nearly perfect visions of far-fetched poise.

Kabab??
Abu Rifai's night kebab
Gineid Alley, just off Sayeda Zeinab square
Maybe not good for the waistline, maybe not good for the heart, but you'll sleep like a baby and wake up the next day with a clear head and the strength to go on all over again. (Is there a doctor in the house to confirm?? )
Top stop for late-night gluttony is Abu Rifai, on Sayeda Zeinab Square.
Head down the alleyway across from the mosque--on your right will be a funky-looking gazebo-like thingy.. (actually the 18th-century Sabil-Kuttab of Sultan Mustafa III)--walk about 10 meters, and there it is, smack in the middle of the alley.
The restaurant doesn't even open until it gets dark, and doesn't close until dawn. Around four or five in the morning, it gets a fair amount of the downtown nightclub crowd and their escorts, wolfing down the meats after a long night of shimmying and money-tossing, respectively. You get families, too, and there's even a photo over the grill indicating that the late Sheikh Shaarawi was a customer.
The usual kebab accoutrements of salad, tahina and bread, and then finally the flesh itself will make you dizzyyy, girls and boys!!!!
One of the great things about this place is that you don't draw unwanted attention, even though you're in the middle of one of the city's most conservative areas.
The neighbors can be a little eeuuuh curious--you get the looks from the balconies, and at one point pelted from above with exploding bombas.
Ah ah ah...but c'est la vie........................
Go ahead, gorge yourself like there's no tomorrow.
Bel hana'a wel shefa'a .................. Enjoy... |

Shopping?
A visit to khan al khalili is almost compulsory in Cairo. But you will need a lot of patience. You won't be able to walk more then three steps without being stopped by a seller. Some will invite you to tea, others will invite you to their hidden shop, where you can find very "special" low prices. you should know there's no obligation to buy. if you do not want anything, just say no. It doesn't matter how long you have been in a shop, or if you have been invited to tea. You should only buy what you need.
My advice, about the best way to say no, is to say you don't like it. Any other excuse will be a waste of time. If you say it is too small, they will find a bigger one. If you say it it's too colorful they will find the appropriate one. If you say it is too expensive, they will understand you are interested, but you want to keep negotiating. |

Hello there,
It will be terribly hot indeed..
But where are you going to stay? Will you have AC? air conditionned...
People only start to go out in the evening, during the summer in Cairo... but it is a very very hot time.
Maybe you can try going to Alexandria a little bit, orto other seaside places.

Although I've not yet spent an August there, I'd say it's not so humid as other places... but HOT it will be :sunny: Humidity it's about 40%, whereas you may find 70-80% in other countries.
Many people I know travel to Alex or Marsa Matrouh in August :)

Well, If you find Cairo too hot take a train ( 2 hours) for Alexandria..the Turbo 1st class is LE 34 one way...
You can spend the day and back at night..a change of air !!
That could be great for you....
