While I was in Cairo, I went to go see the Pharoanic Village. If you don't know a lot about Egypt, or Cairo's history and would like to know more, I'd really recommend this place.
First you go on this boat for about 20-30 minutes and you pass by these scenes. Live re-enactments of everyday life in Ancient Egypt. They showed how perfume was made, how fishing was done...just a lot of things.
After, you disembark and get a guided tour through 7 museums, with a couple stops at strategically placed bazaars, and stalls. The museums aren't bowl-you-over awesome or anything like that. There's lots of pictures, write-ups on the walls, miniature landscapes, etc. What really makes this place shine is that the guides are wonderfully informed about the museum they are talking about.
If I remember correctly the museums covered:
- Ancient Egypt (pyramids etc)
- Islamic history
- Everyday life in Egypt (Ancient to Present)
- Nasser/ Sadat
- Napoleon's invasion
- Coptic Cairo
I visited sites all over Cairo, and only found out their background history when I came to the Village. It really openned my eyes and made me appreciate the places I'd visited.
You need to have a whole day really when visiting this place, but it is like going through a living guidebook of Egypt.
You can also buy tickets for a 1-2 hour cruise along the Nile, or purchase a dinner in their restaurant so you can sit and relax after the whole tour. |

I absolutely agree about the Pharaonic Village. The 'scenes' were obviously stage-managed for the Tourists, but the Museums and the information they contained were fascinating.
The restaurant is also worth a visit.
Next time I am in Cairo will certainly go back and perhaps do the cruise also. |
