CAIRO, Egypt: You no longer have to be Egyptian to work as a belly dancer in
Egypt.
http://www.kron4.com/Global/story.asp?S=2572892
The government has reversed a decision that barred foreigners from working as dancers in the country that is widely regarded as the home of belly dancing.
The ban was imposed last year amid complaints from local performers that non-Egyptians were taking away their jobs.

From the same article:
[Some foreign dancers say they were brought back by popular demand. They also cited a lack of high-quality Egyptian performers.]
And I say...anything goes when it comes to the belly business of today!!
People that watch are usually half drunk..so how would they know high quality from low quality!!

I do not care if the Egyptian dancers are better of worse.. but what makes me wonder is why people that find work in a country other than their own, feel the need to put down the locals!!
Oh well!!

OMG - Was this also printed in the article. If so I don't think it is PC for the writer to state that people that watch are usually half drunk. |

Ya Monica,
An American woman that I know who works in Egypt as a dancer loves Egypt. I've never heard her put down Egyptian dancers. She just loves to dance so much and decided she had to go to Egypt to try! She's been there over two years and the ban has been hard on her . . . but she says things are definitely improving now that she can get a contract in the big hotels again. Of course, she also models, does advertising and movies too . . . but I think she loves to dance the most since she is so excited now with the ban lifted. I hope that I can see her when I'm in Cairo in Feb. Of course, I have a list of dancers I'd like to see . . . and I hope things are going well for everyone so the hotels can have lots of shows!

I am sure your friend will start having good contracts..
I think it might be the media that like to spread things that are probably not always true as we know!!!
As of late after Fifi Abdo retired.. and DIna had a bit of a break  .. not many Egyptian dancers made it big...anyway it is to entertain and for some I guess could be a passion too!!
