Hi. I am am American currently living in the US. My husband is Egyptian living in Mansoura (SP), Egypt. He has been there for about 4 months. Prior to that, we were both living in the UAE (for 5.5 years).
He is trying to start an engineering business in Egypt and I am thinking about moving to Egypt to be with him. Living in the US with 3 kids is hard (age 9, 11 and 2). Especially after living in Dubai where I was exposed to such a multi-cultural society, and had a housemaid.
I am a bit worried about moving to Egypt, however. I have been to Egypt about 10 years ago. But how is it to live in? I was very happy in Dubai. I miss it very much. I am not so happy here in the US. When you live abroad and return to your country of origin, your opinions change and you change. You grow but nobody grows with you, in a way, you isolate yourself from people when you leave and return because you have changed.
How is health care in Egypt? Can you get western products? How are western women treated in Egypt? I was treated very well in the UAE. I would hope to be treated as well in Egypt. fortunately, my hsuband is Egyptian and would be able to act as a buffer to any problems I may have. i am not concerned about nightlife or things of that nature as I have 3 kids, I am more concerned about safety, schooling, crime, etc.
Anybody, I would be grateful to your kind help.
Masalama.

Yes- that's the first time in a while he's made me smile!!!!!
My mother is making her 6th trip in 7 years to Luxor soon. Although she never travels alone (either with me, my sister or my father) she feels perfectly safe and at home there. Appart from the traffic that is
I guess the trick is to aclimatise psychologically so that you become immune to being pestered as a tourist. I don't believe,as a woman you would have any extra problems. In any case, the people who hassle you in the streets soon learn to recognise you. It only works on visitors for the first few days while they are still pale and vulnerable looking.
I intend to retire there. |

Cen, you don’t have to worry what so ever about this matter … Egypt is so safe.
As to the standard of living and health care, it all depends on who well-off you are.
Middle class Egyptians are now suffering because of the continued harsh economic conditions and the increasing prices … so it is difficult a bit.
Egypt is much crowded also … and this may frustrate you from time to time.
The treatment that you will receive as a Western lady is excellent especially when you highlight you are a married woman to an Egyptian. You have to start learning Arabic, if you did not do already … believe me that’s gonna save you lots of money, for example overcharges by taxi drivers.
Generally Egypt is not a match for Western states in Health Care, but still it depends on the hospital/doctor. You will find many excellent, yet expensive hospitals; usually have many physicians educated in Western states.
