Parking.Shopping/Downtown cairo

To go shopping downtown, it is better to take a taxi, and let the driver drop you off at either Tahrir Square or Falaki Square. Or, if you RENTED A CAR, there is now, thankfully, many places to park. First, you have the new underground parking, as well as private parking garages at the Nile Hilton, and a seven-floor garage at the Ramses Hilton shopping annex. You also have the several-stories Bustan Garage in the center of the shopping district. The first hour costs 1.75, and each hour after costs L.E.1.00. The Bustan Garage has many shops as well, including a disco and other outlets. However, there is another parking lot in Falaki Square (Midan Bab-el-Louk). The first hour costs L.E.1.00, with a deduction of 50 piasters for each hour afterwards. Unfortunately, most shops don’t open till 10:00 a.m., so even if you go early, it isn’t likely that you will find a vacancy, and the shops will still be closed.

Kasr El-Nil Street (sometimes spelt Qasr El-Nil) is known for its numerous shoe shops. As I learnt in Italy, the best shoes or healthiest for your feet, are pure leather shoes. You will find many shops that sell genuine leather shoes and accessories, but beware, most shoe shops sell artificial leather shoes, which look genuine. So, if you want your shoes, as well as your feet, to last longer, choose real leather. The inside linings will reveal if the shoes are leather or not. You may pay more, of course, but the ‘investment’ is worth it. “Bedros” in Talaat Harb St. near Cinema Radio, offers real leather shoes, and “Vero Chic”, as well as some other shoe shops. These leather shoe shops usually have ladies’ handbags, to match the shoes. Facing “Bedros” is “Vero Chic” which has been there for ages, and is known for selling excellent leather shoes, purses for women, and leather capes or coats for women, and men.

The Nile River is the longest river in the world, stretching for 4,187 miles. The Nile flows from south to north and is formed by three major tributaries: the White Nile, the Blue Nile and the Atbara.

The Blue Nile has its source in the highlands of the African country of Ethiopia, by Lake Tana. The runoff from spring rain and melting snow caused the annual summer flood of the Nile that the Egyptians depended on for water to irrigate their crops, and deposit fertile top soil.

The Mena House Oberoi Cairo

History

The Mena House Oberoi is set in 40 acres of jasmine-scented gardens with the Pyramids towering above. It was originally a royal lodge used by Khedive Ismail, the King of Egypt, as a house for himself and his guests while on hunting trips in the desert or during visits to the Pyramids of Giza. With the opening of the Suez Canal, he enlarged the guesthouse to receive international and royal guests visiting the Pyramids. Empress Eugenie was one of them as was Albert, Prince of Wales.

In the 1880s, the guesthouse was bought by Fredrick Head who named it "Mena House" after the first of the 76 kings on the famous "Tablet of Abydos". It was once again sold to an English couple, who turned it into a luxurious hotel. Although the fittings, architecture and decorations remained oriental in style, some English touches began to appear. At a time when balconies were unknown in hotels, the owners decided that every room should have an open balcony overlooking the Pyramids

Very nice pictures and captions, thanks....My father who visted Alexandria recently has told me it has not been kept well and is not like what he remembered it, it's fallen into disrepair...Death to the Mubarak administration and every other "Muslim" government official who has sacrificed the culture and well-being of their people to appease the white devils of the West.

Having an Alexandria father, I have been visiting the city since I was a kid.
I can say the city was restored and beatified more than any other part in Egypt, and the governor did maintain the same Alexandrian atmosphere ... and indeed he succeed.

EK ... please visit Alexandria yourself and judge it ... and don't prejudge deeds of people ... remember "enna ba3d el-zan ethm" (little suspicion is sin)
