Yesterday I learned that in Canada there are 2 kinds of Canadians. There are the French Canadians and the English Canadians. The French are in the East area of Canada and the English are in the WEst. Also learned that lots of French Canadians have dark skin. My grandmother was from Montreal so I can infer that she was French. How did the French Canadians get dark skin?
It seems to me that skin color has been an issue for so long. Even back in the Roman era the wealthy wanted light skin and the poor were considered dark skinned. There is a big aberration about skin color, especially here in the US. Did the Romans start this?
I recently met a guy who is Canadian with dark skin. But speaks English as if he grew up in L.A. His father is English. This is all so interesting to me. I try to look at people more from an anthropological point of view. Instead of a political or "race" view. |

This is my (admittedly, very simplistic) view of skin colour....but remember I teach 8 year olds and I'm always trying to break down everything into the simplest terms for them, just the way I think these days  so this is how I'd try explaining it to them, when they ask why people have different skins..
(I know you didn't ask for an explanation, saffron......I'm just blethering on here with my personal views and no doubt, somebody who knows a lot more about genetics than I do will think this is a load of BS), sometimes I used to look at forums with questions like, Were the Ancient Egyptians black? was Jesus white or black? then millions of people get all steamed up and started tearing each other apart........I feel like saying, who cares, get a life..
OK my personal view
Skin colour is part of evolution, just like animals have adapted to cope with their environment over hundreds of thousands of years, so have humans. So people in hot countries have adapted to their climate over thousands of years be developing more melanin in their skins, while people in colder climates have gradually lost the need for it. Obviously, the population of the world moves around........but changes in skin colour take so long to happen, black people moving here or white people moving to a hot country keep their colour for a LONG time.
That's it for any 8 year olds reading this...... |

What really interests me is how people migrate into the different continents. I learned over the weekend, that in Canada there are the French Canadians and the English Canadians. And the French ones have dark skin. They also have to learn French in elementary school. They don't live close to the equator, but live where it's much colder than here, but they have dark skin.
I recently met a guy who lives in Canada, has skin so dark he looks AFrican and speaks like he lives in Los Angeles. |
