I belong to an egyptology society, attending lectures and talks every month or so. Its purely an amateur thing, but I enjoy learning. However, the society has a "social" calendar. And in the summer, they are organising a garden party at the home of one of the members.
Now the majority of the membership are middle aged and retired ladies and gentleman, very respectable and mostly, very knowledgeable about the history of Egypt.
Now bearing in mind the age and respectability of these people, I would love to know if you could come up with any ideas as to why they would call their garden party........ "The Opet Festival"

Hmmmmmm now if my memory serves me right, I cannot see these people indulging in many of the activities that were a part of the original Opet Festival.

Sorry, I just thought it was amusing, and I hope you find it amusing too.

Shareen,
Maybe there's something about the members of your Egyptology club that you still don't know!

Nothing quite so grand as that! Its just a bunch of middle aged and retired folk getting together to hear lectures on Ancient Egypt.
Imagine a room full of twin sets and pearls, flat brogue shoes, hair set and permed together with men in slacks and woolly cardigans over a nice neat shirt and tie and you might get the picture.

Lol Laura...... well...... basically, it is the festival when Amun (the god at Karnak) made his annual visit to his wife at Luxor Temple,...... I will leave it to your imagination as to the purpose of his visit to his wife. Needless to say, the citizens of Thebes also joined in the activities with supreme gusto!
Hence the Opet Festival was simply an excuse for the local population to indulge in a little, shall we say...... horizontal entertainment?

What you said about the Opet was basically true. During this time most common Egyptians had a chance to wirness the priestly procession that most in most case they never got to see. Some were even allowed during this time visit the inside of the temples.

Another event that occured with the Opet festival was another one called Beautiful Feast of the Valley where common Egyptians woulf visit the tomb of a deceased relative to give them blessings. Of course this was a regular customs, but duing this time it obtained a special signifcance.

The Opet festival survives today as the Mouled of Abul' Al Hagag. He was a sufi saint that converted a population of Luxor Egyptians into Sufi islam. He later incorporated most of their traditional beliefs into Sufi Mouled festivals that can be seen each year in Cairo. Many other traditions also survive in rural Egyptian villages.
