Tonight on the news (in Scotland) the headline news was about a dog that had been starved to death in Glasgow.

I know some people take animal rights VERY seriously and I hate to see animals ill-treated, and I think animals DO have rights......but I just can't understand how for some people animal rights take precedence over human rights.

If I go past somebody collecting for charity I HAVE to stop and put something in the tin........but only if it's for humans.

But not animals...I only have so much money and for me, humans are more important.

What does everybody else think?

(that's a bit of a joke really, saying what does EVERYBODY else think, like there are lots of people here :smt089 ) but it would be very very nice if somebody replied then I wouldn't feel like a t*t)

Hi Moll...Didn't see the news tonight

Your right....peoples welfare is more important.....but some people will always give to an animal charity before one for children etc.

But being an animal lover I feel it is important for abuse against animals to be highlighted.....after all they are a little like small children who do love unconditionally and often suffer terribly at the hands of us humans...

We have our lovely Murphy who was a very badly abused dog when my sister brought him home......I must say at first I was worried about having him......now...he's one of us.

The world being as it is there will always be those who will give to both types of charities.

You have a nice evening and enjoy the lovely evening we are having tonight :)

Kushielle, thank you, I am so very grateful to you for replying and not making me feel like a t*t :smt022:

It really upsets me when I see animals neglected, I understand what you mean.........animals are so trusting, they give unconditional love to humans and so often their trust is abused. I think when owners abuse their animals, it says a lot about their attitudes to other living things and that includes humans.

And on the news tonight, I think part of the outrage was that the woman who starved the dog to death was seen going into court looking like she didn't have a care in the world, she was laughing and joking........then there were the pictures of the dead dog

Maybe that says a lot about the media too, how they can provoke outrage and manipulate the public........but I still think that for that to take precedence over humans isn't the way it should be, people are dying in their millions and ONE dead dog is the headline news?

But..........did I say thank you for replying and not making me feel like a t*t?

Just to make it Egypt related

In real life I'm pretty quiet  but once, I was out on the balcony (when we had the flat in Luxor) and I saw some children provoking a donkey, the poor thing had NO idea what it was supposed to be doing but they were beating the **** out of it for no reason I could see...just bcs they were bored and trying to entertain themselves, I suppose...

So I shouted at them, Khalas!!!! and they stopped, but I've no doubt they just went somewhere else to carry on

I really don't understand how people can do that, whether they're Egyptians or Scottish or whatever they are.

HOWEVER.........

When we had the flat in Luxor, there was a donkey that used to wake me up at 4am every morning sounding like somebody was doing something very painful to it

and sometimes I thought about being that somebody  bcs I'm not really a morning person..

You did say thank you :)

I agree with you wholeheartedly....forgive me I'm of on a tangent here....the world I knew as a child is gone and even that of my son's....30-40 years we didn't hear about all this kind of abuse and evil in the world...is it because the world is a smaller place now... because of the media...as you said... or is it just becoming more and more evil by the day sometimes I don't believe what I'm seeing or reading it beggars belief.....

Do you think that society is so numbed by what happens today....that we don't care anymore about human life and our fellow man???

Just a wee thought Moll

I've often thought that same wee thought, Kushielle.......... 8)

When you turn on the news or open a newspaper or log onto the internet, it always seems to be about things that make you go  and you wonder, were these things ALWAYS happening and you just never heard about them? and I DO think news editors have a huge reponsibility, they can decide what to suppress and play down, and what to make an issue of...they are in such a position of power to manipulate people.

I think it's actually quite scary how much power they have........I know in the UK people are always talking about 'spin doctors', people who are employed to try and make the government look good  but some people believe everything they read and something only has to be in print for them to swallow it whole....

Anyway, that's probably a whole different topic.

BTW, did I thank you for answering.........

Last week I was at the local animal shelter shopping for a shelter kitty for my new apartment, and a thought occurred to me.....that here in California, the government even has clean shelters for animals with no homes. But it does not care about all of the homeless in the streets.

I know.........I think there's something wrong in a world where ONE abused Scottish dog makes the first item in a national news programme.

Can't get too steamed up about it, sorry to any animal lovers out there............

I personally would give for ANIMALS not people

People can find jobs, earn money, take care of themselves and what do you offer to a poor dog who was kicked out by his owner or born stranded?

I see so many of those in moscow. this is horrible. they have no place to go but streets. anybody can hurt them, kick, beat up, and no jobs to earn money to feed themselves in a large city

in normal places there are animal shelters for animals to be taken care of before a responsible owner is found.

I see people exploiting animals at Arbat collecting money as if for pets' food. you see sadness in pets' eyes...they know this money is not for them

Absolutely and totally for pets and animals rights..

you know if a society recognizes and acts upon animals' rights, this society is humane enough to take care of people as well

your pet and animal will always be devoted to his owner. pets do not lie, do not steal, do not kill, do not betray anybody. they do not play dirty politics at work or world scene. etc. pets have pure hearts and minds. Everything is quite the opposite with humans.

US doesn't have near enough shelters for the homeless. If you've ever seen the number of homeless people walking around in almost any city you'd see what I mean. I volunteer in a women's shelter that's a nice one. But those kinds are few and far between. There needs to be more care for the homeless, instead of maybe care for the criminals. There are huge prisons for the criminals but no place for the people who have no place to live. There is something wrong with this.

hey Ricky, how's life?

Unfortunately I don't think that's the way it works, not here anyway  there are people who can spend every waking minute devoting themselves to things like donkey sanctuaries or saving hedgehogs ooooh no offence meant :P or getting worked up about a certain species of bird being endangered......but they never give a thought to abused children, or old people dying of hypothermia because they can't afford heating, or women being beaten up and having to live with it because there's nowhere for them to go, or any of the human victims of abuse

And there are people here who treat their pets like babies, who pamper them to death but are totally indifferent to human suffering.

Guess we'll just have to agree to differ..
