These are wonderful photos and they do remind me of happy times in and around Cairo. I took several of little boys riding donkeys which were completely covered in cargo. The fruit and spice markets are beautiful at night, full of color and fragrance and action! I still wear some of the gallabayahs I bought there. They are practical and comfortable and a fine invention!

Saffron,
Those are not Pyjamas..They are called " Galabyas", and it's a traditional Egyptian dress for men and women alike ( with differences in design between men and women of course) It's normally worn by people in villages and people in the city with traditional jobs...

We took videos, Winky. So I can hear the camels bellowing in the market and I can hear the children and their parents selling wares in the market.

My friend took videos as we drove through the streets of Cairo and as we rode on the Nile ship. We went very early in the morning to Hatshepsut's temple and walked alone there. The video shows only our shadows and we hear chirping of little birds. I can still hear the little boys singing as they caught the wind in their small felucas, dodging rocks in the river at Aswan. I can still hear us all laughing as we made our way in the dark through the passages under the figures at Abu Simbel (the lights went out. and we had to "feel" our way.)

These are wonderful memories but they are difficult to share on the internet.

Just returned from a 3 week stay in Alexandria, Damietta & Hurghada and I miss it already.

I don't miss it enough to move there full time; however with situation with USA not being free with visas my male friend cannot get visa to come here..and I don't want to move there full time..so there is no easy solution for this 50 something couple who only want to be together for the rest of our lives. Marriage is not an option...I prefer to remain single.

We already risked a lot legally by staying together as man and wife without a contract.

No future for us I guess but I do love Egypt..and those pictures were so great...brings it all back to me again.

Have you visited the gardens ?

Although the Montazah Palace is closed to the public (its one of the residences of Mubarak, he uses it to meet up with foreign dignitaries)
you can visit the Salamlek Hotel which used to be King Farouks residence and like the other
ancient historical palaces all around Egypt ( Winter Palace/Luxor, Old Cataract /Aswan, the Mena House and Marriott in Cairo)
it has been turned into an hotel
or for a modern hotel right at the edge of the Mediterranean but in the Montazah Palace gardens stay in the Palestine Hotel
http://www.solimantravel.co.uk/HotelHelnanPalestine.htm

Montazah means (broadly speaking) garden
:? Like with so many Arabic words you can not translate it literally
It is one of the most beautiful places in Alex,on a par with the Al Azhar gardens in Cairo

Its not a Palace its a private house !
It took 5 years to build from 1995 till 2000 and since that time they have been working on the interior
A shot from the entrance:

:? I wonder if that is Eva, clutching that apple ?

Winky this is an interesting collection of pictures. Some of them are very beautiful, some of them are very odd, like the windows of an apartment building. I can see you do like Egypt. I hope it is ok to ask you this question. Not knowing precisely your nationality  ( we all gave up on asking or figuring it out, it is up to you), but why do you have such an interest in Egypt to a point of missing it? I mean you are traveling the world (as far as anybody can see), so out of all places, you seem to love Egypt, unless of course you take a keen interest and equal participation in respedctive forums of ALL countries you have been voyaging for years (we presume). Why do you have the most interest/love for/nostalgia (it seems you do have  ) for Egypt?

I hope it is an ok question to ask 8)

I was not so very impressed with Damietta as we were staying in a very poor section and the apartment building was very nasty around it. More like a low income housing but that is where his company placed him while he is heading up a project there. He is architectural engineer and is working on new buildings in New Damietta City.

I love Alexandria and was actually thinking of buying a small place there. There is a 1 bedroom flat in Sidy Bishr that I can buy for around 40000 ep and it would need another 10000 ep worth of work but it's a nice little place.

We'll see what happens. I love Egypt but I love my man more...unfortunately I just don't see things working for us :(

As for finding man in USA..you're probably right..lots cheaper haha...
