Westlife and Bolton set for night of love

March 5, 2007

By Arts writer

Michael Bolton will perform for the first time in South Africa on Friday.

The popular balladeer will join Irish boy-band Westlife and Danish pop group Michael Learns to Rock on the Kfm 94.5 Night of the Superstars bill on Friday.

The concert, which will take place outdoors at the River Club in Observatory, will mark the finale of Westlife's World Love Tour.

South African promoter Duncan Heathfield said: "Westlife is a supergroup made up of great looks, extravagant voices and spectacular songs - you can't go wrong with that combination. Concert-goers are in for love, love, love."

Westlife's The Love Album comes after one of their best years yet. Nicky Byrne, 28, the band's oldest member, said: "We're absolutely delighted with the album. It feels like we've reinvented ourselves. What other pop band has managed to do that?

"To have a greatest hits and then, a couple of albums later, have a second biggest album yet? It proved to us that, with the right material, we have the potential to continue as long as we want."

Songwriter Michael Bolton, meanwhile, has gained recognition as an author and human rights activist as he continues to pursue his successful music career
. He recently wrote his first children's book, The Secret Of The Lost Kingdom, and recorded Go The Distance, the theme song for Disney's animated film, Hercules.

Bolton has sold more than 40 million albums. He recently expanded from the love ballad format and experimented with opera in a showcase with Luciano Pavarotti in Modena, Italy: the Luciano & Friends Together For The Children of Bosnia benefit concert.

Blessed with a knack for songwriting, he appeared on radio playlists in 1983 with Fool's Game, from his self-titled Columbia Records album debut. After the release of The Hunger (1987), critics began to take notice of his fast-emerging talent.

But it was his multi-platinum Soul Provider (1989), with hit singles such as the Grammy-winning How Am I Supposed To Live Without You, that brought the limelight.

lyrics
I bet many people have cried when they listened to this song
Dont we all have people we cant be with for one reason or other ?

I could hardly believe it
When I heard the news today
I had to come and get it
Straight from you
They said you were leavin'
Someone swept your heart away
From the look upon your face
I see it's true
So tell me all about it,
Tell me about the plans you're making
Then tell me one thing more before I go...

Tell me
how am I supposed to live without you Now that I've been lovin' you so
long ?
How am I supposed to live without you
How am I supposed to carry on
When all that I've been living for is gone ?

I didn't come here for crying
Didn't come here to breakdown
It's just that a dream of mine is coming to an end
And how can I blame you
When I built my world around
The hope that someday
We'd be so much more than friends ?
And I don't wanna know
The price I'm gonna pay for dreaming
When even now it's more than I can take

And I don't wanna know the price I'm gonna pay for dreaming
Now that your dream has come true

Tell me how am I supposed to live without you
Now that I've been lovin' you so long
How am I supposed to live without
And how am I supposed to carry on
When all that I've been livin' for is gone

I have just bought Westlife's new CD..... They sing THE ROSE.. which Bette Midler made famous......It is GREAT....

Lyrics for: The Rose

Some say love it is a river
that drowns the tender reed
Some say love it is a razor
that leaves your soul to bleed

Some say love it is a hunger
an endless aching need
I say love it is a flower
and you its only seed

It's the heart afraid of breaking
that never learns to dance
It's the dream afraid of waking
that never takes the chance
It's the one who won't be taken
who cannot seem to give
and the soul afraid of dying
that never learns to live

When the night has been too lonely
and the road has been too long
and you think that love is only
for the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winter
far beneath the bitter snows
lies the seed
that with the sun's love
in the spring
becomes the rose

not too keen on Michael Bolton but I quite like Westlife

Winky, I read that The Last King of Scotland is pretty gruesome  and I have a friend who lived in Uganda, she told me about some of the things she'd heard Idi Amin did to his enemies

I'm such a wimp when it comes to watching movies with violence and torture in them, especially when they're based on fact, even if I shut my eyes I don't think I could listen to all the screaming and the sounds.....is it that bad?

Dont worry Moll :)
just go, its not as bad as I thought
I am the worst wimp in the world  In fact I have been told they will only take me to films for 12 year olds lol since I am either sitting with my eyes closed or crying haha

No you can laugh quite a bit , its only at the end you might want to go to the toilet or something
Of course in reality Idi Amin was a sadist and killed I dont know something like 300000 people ?

Well Winky, I have never liked boy bands. They are too idealistic and romantically inclined to be of any use when all their ardour has finally been defeated in the face of real life and real issues.

I prefer heavy in your face rock and roll, that at least may tempt a person to pervasively spread ones wings against the odds and attempt not to be smitten by love, but smitten with character to make things happen.

Wouldn't expect you to, Rough.............

I don't really like watching boy bands, can't be bothered with all their 'moves' and all the rest of it  but I like some of their music if I'm in a soppy kind of mood :smt049

And I think Michael Bolton's voice is OK, I just never got over his mullet :(

Hope you have a great time anyway, Winky........

with photos I took of him otherwise people can steal them from here (I can sell them via Flickr)

http://www.michaelbolton.com/

Michael looks in very good condition for his age I think he is 52 His shirt blew up and he hasnt got a tummy at all !
His voice is extremely powerful he was the star of the show 8)
Westlife was last and they are cr..
Their voices weak and they don't sound like the voices on their CD best to stick to their CD's !
We left slightly before the finnish
It was packed !
I had 40 cm to sit on and that was in the Golden circle
The most expensive tickets !

Michael Bolton actually looks OK there, Winky 8)

I've heard that before, that these boy bands are actually rubbish when you go to see them live and they don't have all the digital enhancing stuff they have in the studios..

I just noticed in the Sunday papers that MB is coming to Glasgow soon, I think he'll find that a wee bit different from performing in the open air in SA

Anyway that just reminds me of something I was thinking about posting the other day....I was at the theatre last week (Boogie Nights if you want to know, not much story but great music :smt035 ) and I was just thinking, it's not surprising that so many performers get into booze and drugs.......how do you come 'down' after a performance, when your adrenalin is pumping and you're putting everything you've got into it, and the audience is applauding and everything, and you're on a high.......just going back to your hotel and going to bed must be a bit hard :?
