At the moment I am listening to something none of you will ever of heard of: Kaddish by Towering Inferno. Some of the music may seem a bit strange, but it is very good.
My favourite track is "The Bell" which is a modern arrangement of a Bulgarian folk song, but I also recommend "Occupation", "Organ Loop", "Toll 2" and "Kaddish".

It appears that my musical tastes are all too esoteric for most people. Usually, there might be just one in a crowd who can appreciate the dark stuff, but most people like something light and easy to listen to. I've met a few classical fans who like the Tchaikovsky 1812 and Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata and I've got more in common with them, but even they wouldn't go as far as Shostakovich, Orff or Mahler. I once had an LP of Balinese Gamelan music, but nobody else liked it.
One of the things that I like about the Kaddish album is that it mixes eastern with western influences and past folk styles with modern garage rock, and with an intensity that is very appealing.
Does anybody know of any Egyptian, or other middle eastern, composers or performers who have tried to mix classical/jazz/rock, etc. with the musical styles of their own countries? |
